Qurate Hackathon Winner 2022: CX Trendlab

In a fast-paced, 48-hour sprint, our team of 5 creative problem-solvers tackled a real-world challenge from concept to execution.

The goal: Develop a comprehensive solution, including ideation, wireframing, prototyping, and content creation, all within the intense time constraints. Our final deliverable was a compelling video presentation that not only showcased the functionality of the concept but also told the story behind the design, clearly articulating the problem we set out to solve and the innovative approach we took to address it.

With a focus on collaboration, creativity, and storytelling, these hackathons pushed us to think outside the box, rapidly prototype, and craft a vision that resonated with users and stakeholders alike. Both concepts I worked on were awarded first place two years in a row, reflecting the strength of our ideas and the impact of our storytelling.

Role: Design Lead

Problem:
Customers often feel frustrated with irrelevant or random recommendations when shopping online, with limited control over their experience. Algorithms typically rely on assumptions based on browsing behavior, which can result in impersonalized suggestions that don't match the user's preferences or current interests. There’s also a lack of transparency in how these recommendations are generated, leaving users feeling disconnected from the process.

Solution:
Our team designed CX TrendLab, a personalized, gamified shopping experience that empowers users to take control of their recommendations. The core concept revolves around transparency and customization, allowing users to understand why certain products are suggested and giving them the tools to modify these suggestions in real-time.

Key features include:

  • Recommendation Customization: Users can view, like, dislike, and save recommended products, directly influencing the algorithm to better match their preferences.

  • Behavioral Control: Instead of passive data collection, users can actively choose the filters that dictate their shopping experience. They can explore and edit behaviors driving their recommendations.

  • Personal Account Hub: A redesigned, user-friendly hub lets customers manage their interests, brands, and categories, giving them a detailed control over what types of products they want to see.

  • Daily Shuffle & Trending Products: Users are shown daily product recommendations based on their interests, alongside trending products and categories within the broader platform.

Through this approach, CX TrendLab ensures a more relevant and engaging shopping experience, empowering users to personalize their journey rather than rely on assumptions made by automated algorithms.
